Isuzu Repair, Service and History
Isuzu Motors Ltd is a Japanese automaker headquartered in Tokyo that focuses on the production, marketing, and sale of commercial vehicles and diesel engines. Isuzu is famous for its iconic D-Max and models, including the Gemini and Piazza.
Two leading Tokyo engineering companies merged in 1916 to specialize in vehicle development. From 1918 to 1927, it manufactured cars and trucks, partnering with English automaker Wolseley Motors. In 1922, the Wolseley A9 became the first passenger-type automobile made in Japan.
In 1929, the auto department detached from the main company to become Ishikawa Automotive Works. Four years later, it manufactured a government-standard automobile named after the famous Isuzu River and called the Isuzu. The company wasn’t called Isuzu until 1949 when Isuzu Motors Ltd was established.
Isuzu has been known as the leading diesel engine manufacturing company since 1933. It specializes in the development of engine technology that, at the time, was still in its initial stages both technically and commercially. In 1936, the developed air-cooled DA6 and DA4 engines provided the cornerstone for generations of future Isuzu diesel motors.
The first Isuzu consumer and commercial vehicles sold in the U.S. date to 1981. In most of Asia and Africa, Isuzu is mainly known for its different trucks, after they let go of all sales of compact cars and sedans in the late 1990s due to declining sales. The number of Isuzu dealerships in the US started to diminish, and by 2005, Isuzu only had two models, which was the Ascender and the I-series pickup truck, a rebadged GMC Envoy and Chevrolet Colorado, respectively.
When Isuzu still sells passenger cars, they were widely known for focusing on the diesel engine niche. In 2009 however, Isuzu Motors America discontinued the sale of passenger vehicles because its vehicles weren’t distinctive enough to meet the market demands. It wasn’t enough to provide the brand with the grip it required to establish a sustainable long-term presence in the automotive market. The company now focuses on making heavy and light-duty trucks.
