The story of the Swedish, first-class automaker, now defunct, Saab Automobile, started in 1945 when its parent company, Saab AB, an aerospace and defense company, began a project to design a small automobile. The Saab 92 was the first production vehicle and, in 1949, was introduced to the public. With their iconic slogan, “Born From Jets”, still roots from their aerospace legacy, Saab Automobile AB was reconstructed into a standalone company in 1989.
In 1989, General Motors took 50 percent ownership of Saab, which led to the birth of two well-known models such as the Saab 9-3 and Saab 9-5. Later, GM bought the remaining 50 percent in 2000, making General Motors the complete owner of Saab Automobile AB. However, in 2010, GM sold the Saab Automobile AB to the Dutch automaker, Spyker Cars N.V.
After several years of establishing a quality engineering reputation and eventually a luxury price tag, the company failed to increase its customer base outside of its niche.
Saab suffered financial difficulties in previous years and was at all costs avoiding insolvency through 2011. Shortly after GM blocked a Chinese conglomerate from completely acquiring the company, Saab appealed for bankruptcy. In 2012, it was announced that National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS), a newly built company, had purchased Saab Automobile’s bankrupt state, putting Saab cars on the road once again in late 2013, although at a much different scale.
Saab vehicles are known for their uniqueness and their driving dynamics have been highly commended by various journalists and owners. However, many people also have questioned their reliability. Due to NEVS’s financial difficulties, Saab announced in 2014 that they had canceled the licensing agreement that allows NEVS to use the Saab name. Currently, Saab does not have any production of automobiles in the US automotive market. NEVA announced in 2016 that they will no longer use the Saab trademark, instead, they plan on using their company name on its car, which is based on Saab 9-3 platform.
